Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring and publishing content so that AI assistants and answer features, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, can find it, trust it and cite it when they answer a question.
Why AEO matters now
People increasingly ask a question and expect a direct answer, instead of scanning a list of links. Answer engines read many sources, then write a short response and often name the sources they used.
If your brand is not one of those sources, a growing share of your potential customers may never see you, even if you rank well in traditional search.
How answer engines choose sources
Each platform works differently and none publish their exact rules, so no one can promise a result. In practice, sources that tend to be used share the same qualities:
- The page answers the question clearly and early, in plain language.
- The content is specific, accurate and kept up to date.
- The site is easy to crawl, with clean structure and structured data.
- The brand is a consistent, well-referenced entity across the web.
- Other trusted sites mention or link to it.
How to start with AEO
- List the 20 questions your customers ask before they buy.
- Check how AI assistants answer them today, and whether you are mentioned.
- Write a direct, two to three sentence answer at the top of the page that covers each question.
- Add FAQ sections and schema markup (FAQPage, Organization, Service, Article).
- Allow AI crawlers in robots.txt and publish an llms.txt file that points to your key pages.
- Keep pages updated, show a last-updated date and review results every month.
Common AEO mistakes
- Burying the answer under long introductions.
- Publishing thin pages that repeat what everyone else says.
- Blocking AI crawlers by accident.
- Inconsistent company details across your site and profiles.
- Chasing tricks instead of useful, accurate content.
